In
1959, the first fiberglass outrigger canoe mold
was made in California from the koa canoe, Malia. In 1960, the first
fiberglass copy of the Malia was used during
the Moloka'i to O'ahu race. California has been racing canoes ever since and has over the
years developed its own family and history.
The advent of the fiberglass canoe allowed outrigger
canoe racing to be brought to the masses. And
since then, California’s outrigger canoe family has grown with new clubs establishing
themselves (and flourishing) up and down the
California coast. But it doesn't stop there, California’s extended family reaches into Arizona and Nevada where the joy of paddling is as strong as it is by
the ocean.
The
Kalifornia Ohana Tee is in honor of all
the clubs who help to make the California outrigger racing community so rich. On the back of
the shirt, all member clubs of NCOCA and SCORA
are represented. And on the front, a tribute
is made to the canoe that made it all possible,
